The GS T&D Products MSO motor operators are designed for reliable remote operation of any disconnecting, security grounding, load-break or high speed fault switch, 15kV to 765kV.

ELECTRICAL CONTROLS
All electrical controls are conveniently located and are readily accessible for either side of the housing, this permitting easy and rapid access to all connections.

Mounted in the control panel are three knife switches, two reversing contactors and protection fuses. Two of the knife switches control main current to the motor. The third is connected to the heater. Fuses are of the slow blow type. The motor reversing contactors are solenoid operated with their armatures mechanically interlocked to prevent

generation of simultaneous open and close commands. They are electrically connected for seal-in operation i.e. in such a manner that, once an operation cycle is initiated, the motor will continue to run until that cycle is completed. All wiring is stranded type complete with marking tabs on terminal points and wire ends to facilitate tracing. All necessary external connections are made at a strip type terminal block mounted adjacent to the conduit opening. The terminals are of the clamp type eliminating the need for connectors.

A quantity of up to eight cam actuated limit switches are used to electrically control the limits of travel required as well as to serve as initiators for signalling devices. The limit switches are readily accessible for initial setting as well as for adjustment at any time after installation.

MOTOR
A full range of high starting torque motors are available for use with this mechanism. All are of the totally enclosed type utilizing moisture resistant windings and permanently lubricated ball bearings. Motors are available in 48, 125, or 250 volt D.C. and 115 or 230 volts 60 Hertz A.C.

BRAKE
A fast acting disc brake beneath the motor prevents overtravel of the switch operating mechanism. The brake is spring set and solenoid released so that operation is automatic in the event of power failure. Should the solenoid fail to retract, the motor possesses sufficient torque to overpower the brake.

GEAR TRAIN
Cadmium plated, high carbon steel gears keyed to high strength steel shafts comprise the gear train. Oil impregnated bronze bushings are used throughout eliminating any requirement for routine bearing lubrication. The entire assembly is easily accessible for inspection purposes.

HOUSING
The housing is rigidly constructed of welded aluminum plate. Easy access is provided to all components via two large aluminum covers rendered weather-tight by closed cell sponge neoprene gaskets. Padlock lugs are provided for each cover. A large removable conduit plate in the housing floor may be drilled to accept all conduits. The housing is ventilated by a screened weather-proof breather also located in its floor.

MANUAL OPERATION AND MODE SELECTOR HANDLE
Two types of manual operation are available; (a) 24" (610mm) diameter handwheel used in conjunction with an outboard gear reducer; (b) removable hand crank used in conjunction with an outboard bearing.

(a) Handwheel
A standard 24"or 610mm diameter handwheel is mounted above the mechanism housing for manual mode operation. The wheel is coupled to the output shaft by means of a heavy cast lug on one of its spokes which slips over a stud projecting from the shaft.

The external mode selector handle, marked "Motor Manual", when moved to the "Manual" position, decouples the motor from its gear train by disengaging an intermediate spur gear. A cut-out switch activated by this handle prevents electrical operation in the "Manual" mode by interrupter the main circuit. The selector handle is held in either of its two positions by a spring-loaded detent bolt which must be withdrawn before the handle can be moved. The handle may also be padlocked in either position.

(b) Removable Hand Crank
The detachable hand crank is stowed inside the mechanism housing. Prior to cranking, the external mode selector handle is moved to the "local manual" position to expose the hand crank receptacle. The hand crank inserted and turned for manual operation.

The external Mode Selector Handle is spring retracted into recessed detents which hold it in whichever of its three positions has been selected. It will normally be left in the "remote electrical" position which permits motorized operation only. Selecting "off" precludes both motor and manual operation. Turning the handle to "local manual" exposes the hand crank receptacle and disengages the motor disc brake.
